This is probably the best film Ken Loach has made and one of my all time favourites. It tells the story of an unemployed mam from Liverpool who travels to Spain to fight fascism and defend the Republic. Whether you the know the history of the Spanish Civil War or not, this is a must see film.

I remembered seeing this film a few years ago but couldn't remember the title so I searched the internet to find what it was. The DVD was exactly what I was looking for: a great film which was very moving in the way it portrayed the passion and emotion of those fighting fascism in the Spanish Civil War. Excellent value for money and a must-see film for anyone interested in the Civil War and the struggle against Franco.
One of Loach's better films, in a canon of fine works. Moving and engrossing, with a quality of light at times more cinematic than his other works, Land and Freedom captures not only a sliver of people's history, but also plays with the perennial theme of personal pre-occupations against greater political and social themes. Loach also plays with the mix of cultures coming together in a youthful melting pot of fear, indignation, hope and longing and we see how the English reserve is but a thin veneer masking a passion ordinarily claimed by all things latin. Recommended.
Land and Freedom is a fantastic film that in the space of its 90mins (or whatever) is able to paint a picture of the Spanish Civil War for the betrayal it was. The film is arguably Orwell influenced to the extent it could be 'Homage to Catalonia - the Movie', yet is still a fantastic representation of the feeling, debates and controversies that faced the both the Republican government and the POUM
