Windsurfing Sails

Windsurfing Sails

Choosing a windsurfing sail is not just a matter of necessity. The right sail can make your experience that much more enjoyable: if you're a beginner, the right sail will give you the confidence to keep learning. If you're more experienced, choosing a different sail allows you to experiment and play around with different techniques. Luckily, there are plenty of windsurfing sails on offer so you're sure to find something that fits.

Pick the Right Sail

When you're deciding what size windsurfing sail to choose, there are a couple of things to consider. Think about the wind strength at your favourite windsurfing destination. If it's not very windy then a larger sail is necessary, as a larger surface area means more area to catch the wind. In windier spots, a smaller sail could work.

Your size also has an impact, especially if you are just beginning to windsurf. A smaller sail is more manageable and means less overall weight, making it easier to handle on and off the water. You can find windsurfing sails in sizes from 4 to 4.9 metres squared, right up to 8 to 9.9 metres squared.

Windsurf Sail Materials

Windsurfing sails are available in a choice of materials, the most commonly available being Dacron, Mylar and Monofilm. Which material you choose depends on your ability and your preferred style of windsurfing. Generally, Dacron is lightweight and not as resistant to damage with Monofilm sails being more robust and less likely to go out of shape. You can find a choice of Monofilm sails, which you might prefer over a less resistant material thanks to its durability.

Important Points to Consider

As well as size and material there are things to consider such as visibility on the water. Clear panels in the sail will help you see where you are going and a brightly coloured sail helps you to stand out to others on the water. You can find a choice of sails with clear panels and bright edges, to combine the best of both.
