I saw a clip of this film by chance on you tube, scantily clad women fighting in the trenches of World War One WTF!!! I thought must see this to say the girls had no inflence would be a lie but couple that with my interest in World war One I was intrigued. Like a lot of films I never heard of or didn't make it big at the box offices. Usually once you get past the trailers which tend to be the best bits and the written hype you usually have a fairly mundane film. If you have paid near top whack for it even worse so paying a small amount as a risk was a better option. However Suckerpunch is far from mundane the story and method of filming is dark and quirky but works pretty well. The basics of the film revolved around a girl who after being abused by her stepfather is institutionalised in a women's asylum. She plans to escape and to do that has to achieve a number of objectives namely get a map, a knife etc. But to do this she sinks into a strange dark world where the asylum turns into some form of Moulin Rouge come brothel as the motivation and the key to unlock the sequences to achieve the objectives. Once I got my head around it all I found the film entertaining. Personally if I had any criticisms of the film it would be my view on expanding the explanation behind some of the sequences When looking at the extras particularly the pre-film story board sketches, for me, around First World War I wish they would have expanded on that particular story of how scientists managed to re-incarnate dead German soldiers and turn them into fighting automatons. I suppose that expansion outlined in the pre-film story board sketches could have been applied to all the sequences but then the film would have been too long. An entertaining filmRead full review
Well. Lots lots of imaginative fight scenes and special effects, girls beating the hell out of robots, zombies etc etc. So good fun. The underlying story though - which is about a emotional, physical and sexual abuse - is actually quite dark and disturbing. If you watch the film for a bit of fun, it's OK. If you think about what is actually going on, it's enough to give you nightmares. Not, in my view, suitable for children, in spite of the 12 rating: should be at least 15. But a bit of fun, and thought provoking at the same time. Unusual.
If you are the sort of person who enjoyed "One Flew Over The cuckoo's Nest", Sucker Punch is in a similar vein but a bit darker. Sometimes it's a bit hard to differentiate fact from fantasy but it is a steam punk action movie with some mind boggling special effects. You will be thinking about this film long after you have seen it. And, of course, there is the music... The critics panned this film but everyone I know who has seen it thinks it is amazing and completely taken off guard by the ending. You can easily watch this film several times and discover new aspects you missed. More cult than mainstream, well worth a watch.
