In retirement and a Meccano enthusiast I had long been looking for something whereby I could control a mobile device in some form from a computer. I then came across a series of books on Mindstorms in Foyles and purchasing one of these lead onto the purchase of MindstormsNXT2.0 This is a collection of appropriate LEGO parts, an associated micro processor, motor and sensor units together with computer software and the necessary electrical cables including USB though the system will work to Blue Tooth with the appropriate Dongle. If you are a novice in this field like me, albeit I consider myself computer literate, the instructions that come with the kit are far from adequate and the book I bought from Foyles, a basic guide to the subject, was invaluable. This gives a guide to four initial models all of which were very easy to build. Initial programming instructions easily downloaded onto the model enabled me to have the model working at first attempt. There is, however, far more to it than that and I found myself getting very absorbed with projects as I became more familiar with the programming techniques. I am still a long way from becoming fully familiar with the whole subject but it is going to afford me a lot of interest particularly in the winter days. If, like me, you are interested in learning a bit about computer programming and seeing something work from your efforts this is fascinating equipment to have. I am not going to call it a toy, I believe it is used in education anyway, and I recommend it. Its weakness possibly is rather poor instructions for getting startedRead full review
The Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 is a fantastic educational kit that allows teachers and students to focus on two aspects of creativity and critical thinking: physically building a robot out of the Lego kit, and secondly programming the robot to move and interact with the included software. As a technology teacher, I knew I needed to get a Mindstorms kit. I have been completely satisfied with this kit, of course I knew exactly what I should be getting, the price was the reason I purchased here on eBay. There are several different kits, all similar, but with different pieces. As an educator, ideally I'd want the education kit which has many more pieces and a rechargeable battery and some addition components in the software - but I already have a classroom set of the educational kit at school. This was a personal purchase so that I could 'play' and also allow my own children to experience the fun, I mean the educational opportunity! I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys robotics, or has children who might enjoy this. Children get a great opportunity to work on creativity and critical thinking, all the while get a great and practical experience in engineering and supplementing their math skills with great logic and algorithmic programming skills. Great 21st Century Skills are easily addressed with this one purchase.Read full review
Bought this for my son who is 12. He loves it - built it up on his own and within days was programming it. Highly recommend it.
